What is the ego ?

We humans are born into life as pure consciousness. A small child has no thoughts about who it is. It is just awake, present and aware.

Then, around the age of two, society begins to program the child’s thinking. The child learns language, rules, names and social roles. At the same time, a psychological self is created in the mind – what we usually call the ego.

There is nothing wrong with the ego. On the contrary. We must develop a psychological self in order to function in the world.

The problem is that most people never learn that the ego is just a learning self.

The child begins to believe that the child is the voice in their head. And that belief carries over into adulthood.

The ego then becomes a self-image built from thoughts, memories, experiences, achievements and the opinions of others. It constantly lives on confirmation and compares itself to others. It wants to be liked, successful, rich, spiritual, beautiful and important.

When the ego is active, fear, anxiety, envy, jealousy, shame, guilt, bitterness, and the need to control arise. The ego creates conflicts both within you and in your relationships. The ego seeks happiness outside of itself – in money, status, relationships, achievements, consumption, or even in spirituality.

But the ego is never satisfied.

Behind all these thoughts, however, is your true self.

The true self is not thoughts. It is not your history. It is not your name, your profession, or your experiences.

The true self is the waking consciousness that observes all thoughts without being them.

When you live from your true self, a natural feeling of inner peace, love, and happiness arises. Not because life is perfect, but because you no longer derive your identity from your thoughts.

The Buddha and the non-duality tradition pointed this out thousands of years ago. They taught that human suffering arises when they identify with their psychological self, the ego.

Meditation is the way home to the true authentic self behind the thoughts.

When you learn to rest in the consciousness behind the thoughts, the ego slowly begins to lose its grip.

To get in touch with your true self behind your entire thought process.
